Most Shopify stores start with one product and a few variants: a t-shirt in Black, Grey and Olive, sizes S to XL. That works until the catalog grows. Then the variants get hard to manage, and the usual fix, splitting them into separate products, creates a new problem for shoppers.
This post covers why stores split their variants, what it costs them on the product page, and how product group swatches link the products back together. At the end we compare the top 3 Shopify apps that do it.
The short answer: keep each color as its own product for SEO, images and inventory, then use an app to show the other colors as swatches on every product page and collection card. Shoppers see one product with options, and you keep the separate products.
1. Why stores split their variants
Variants are fine for small differences like size. They get harder to manage when each color or material is really a different product. Stores split them into separate products for a few reasons:
- Option limits. Shopify allows 3 options per product. A legging with color, size, length and fabric already needs 4.
- Images. Each color needs its own gallery. With variants, every image lives in one shared gallery and shoppers scroll past colors they didn't pick.
- SEO. "Olive oversized shirt" can't rank as its own page if Olive is only a variant. A separate product gets its own URL, title, description and Google Shopping listing.
- Different details. Colors often differ in price, fabric, care notes or launch date. Separate products can hold different descriptions and reviews.
- Operations. Suppliers, feeds and inventory tools often work one product per color.
2. The problem after splitting
Once each color is its own product, shoppers lose the link between them:
- A shopper lands on "Oversized Shirt - Olive" from Google and has no way to see that it also comes in Black and Grey.
- Collection pages fill up with the same shirt 3 times, so shoppers scroll further to find anything new.
- To compare colors, shoppers go back to the collection or search again. Every extra step is a chance to leave.
The product page is where the buying decision happens. If the color a shopper wants is one search away, some of them won't make that search.
3. The fix: product group swatches
A product group links separate products as if they were variants of one product. On the product page, shoppers see a row of color or image swatches. Clicking a swatch opens the other product, and each product keeps its own URL, images and SEO.
The same swatches can show on collection cards, so the grid shows one card per style with its colors underneath instead of the same shirt 3 times.
Shopify has this built in as Combined Listings, but only on Shopify Plus. On every other plan you need an app.
What to look for in an app
- Swatches on the product page and on collection cards
- Bulk grouping, so you don't link hundreds of products by hand
- Rules that group new products as you add them
- Sold-out and draft products handled for you
- A price that fits the number of groups you need

Ratings, review counts and prices are from each app's Shopify App Store listing on October 6, 2026.
1. FD Combined Listings & Variant
5.0 stars (69 reviews) · Built for Shopify · Free plan, then $4.95 or $19.95 a month
Disclosure: this is our app, built by the FittDesign team. It links separate products as variants with color, image, button, dropdown and other swatch styles, on the product page and on collection cards.
Pros
- The lowest price for most stores: 10 groups free, 1,000 groups for $4.95 a month, unlimited for $19.95.
- Multi-option groups (for example Color and Size across products) and subcategory groups are included on the free plan.
- Bulk grouping from title patterns, handle patterns, a metafield or a CSV file, plus automations that group new products as you add them.
- Works with Shopify Sidekick: ask Sidekick to combine products and it fills in the group for you to review.
- An Admin API and MCP server for agencies and stores with their own tools.
- Split products is included on paid plans: it turns the variants of one product into separate products, the first step of this whole process.
- Live chat with people, not a bot.
Cons
- Fewer reviews than the big swatch apps, as it launched in November 2023.
- Automations are capped: 1 on Starter, 5 on Pro.
- API access is turned on per store on request.
- No bundle or upsell features. It does one job.

- Product bundles and frequently bought together are included in the top plan.
- Stock display, low-stock alerts and hiding sold-out variants.

- You pay for bundles and other features even if you only need product groups.
- A few low-star reviews mention a slower site and theme conflicts.
3. Variant Robot: Link Products (8Kilo)
4.6 stars (13 reviews) · Built for Shopify · $16 a month, 14-day free trial
A rules-first app: you set one rule and it links matching products for you.
Pros
- One rule by title, SKU, tag or metafield links your whole catalog, and keeps it linked as products change.
- Detects colors without setup.
- Renders on the server, so swatches load with the page and search engines can read them.
- Unlimited products and groups at one flat price.
- Reviewers say it "just works" and praise the support.
Cons
- No free plan. $16 a month even if you only need a few groups.
- Built around rules, so a catalog with irregular titles or SKUs needs cleanup first.
- English only, and a small number of reviews to judge it by.
- One reviewer notes it lacks multi-option selection.
5. Which one to pick
- You want the most features for the lowest price: FD Combined Listings & Variant. Start free with 10 groups.
- You also want bundles and stock alerts in the same app: GLO Color Swatch on the Gold plan.
- Your titles or SKUs follow one clean pattern and you want to set one rule: Variant Robot.
Whichever you pick, the setup is the same: split colors into their own products where it helps SEO and merchandising, then link them back with swatches so shoppers never have to search for the color they want.
