Split products
Split products does the opposite of grouping. It takes one product with variants and creates a separate product for each option value. For example, a T-shirt with 4 colors becomes 4 products, one per color. Each new product keeps its sizes as variants.
Split products is included on the Starter ($4.95) and Pro ($19.95) plans, with no limit on split jobs. It is not available on the Free plan. On a paid plan, you see Split Products in the app menu.
How a split works
- Open Split Products and click Create split job.
- Click Add products and pick up to 50 products.
- For each product, choose the options to split by under Split by:. Only options with more than one value can be used. The app shows how many split products each one will create.
- Set the title, handle, search listing, status and copy settings. See the sections below.
- Save. You see Split job queued. Your split products will appear once Shopify finishes processing.
If you pick two options, like Color and Material, you get one product for each combination.
The Split Products list shows each job with its original product, the new products, and a status: Splitting, Ready or Failed.
What happens to the original product
Nothing. The original product stays as it is, with all its variants. You decide whether to keep it, archive it or delete it in Shopify.
What the new products get
Each new product starts as a Shopify copy of the original, including its translations. It then keeps only the variants for its option value. The app sets these from your choices:
Product title & handle pattern
- Product title pattern is
{{product.title}} - {{option.value_1}} by default, like "Linen Shirt - Olive". - Product handle pattern sets the URL handle. Leave it blank to match the title pattern.
- Click Insert variables to add the option name, option values or the original title.
Search engine listing
- Page title is the new product's title by default.
- Meta description is the original product's description by default.
- You can use the original product's type, vendor, prices, SEO title and SEO description, the first variant's title or SKU, and your store's name, currency, phone and country.
Product status
- Draft (default) or Active. Start with Draft if you want to check the products before shoppers see them.
Copy from original
- Product images: All images, Featured variant images, or All variant images (default). All variant images keeps, for each variant, every image from its featured image up to the next variant's featured image. Arrange the gallery so each variant's photos sit together.
- Product metafields (on by default): copies the original product's metafields, except app metafields.
- Variant metafields (off by default): copies each variant's metafields, except app metafields, to the matching new variant.
- Keep original option (on by default): keeps the split option on the new product with a single value, like Color: Olive. This can help with filters and search.
Tags are copied from the original product.
Delete a split job
Click Delete on a job in the list. This permanently deletes the split products the job created. The original product is not affected. This can't be undone.
The app only deletes products it created. If you deleted a new product yourself first, the job still deletes cleanly.
Limits
- Up to 50 products per split job.
- A product that already has a finished split job can't be split again. Delete the job first.
- A product that is being split can't be added to another job until it finishes.
Group the new products
The new products are separate listings. To show them as swatches on each other's pages, create a group from them in FD Combined Listings.
